Since 2008 the Sooners have been arguably one of the best college football teams in the nation, and probably the best team to not have won a championship in the last 10 years. OU made it to the National Championship in the ‘08-‘09 season against Florida, they’ve won 7 Big 12 Championships in that time, 3 College Football Playoff appearances, and 3 Heisman Trophy winners. With all that success follows a lot of thrilling games that Sooner fans will remember forever. Here’s our top 10 best OU football games of the last decade.

10. Bedlam 2013 “No Knight No Problem”

#17 ranked Sooners was fighting for bragging rights, to keep their rival #6 Oklahoma State from clinching a BCS berth, and could actually claim a BCS bowl spot for themselves with a win in a cold, loud Stillwater environment. It was a slow start for both teams as the game went into halftime at 10-10, but the news was OU starting quarterback Trevor Knight would miss the 2nd half due to a hand injury. They would bring in Kendall Thompson who then would be replaced by Blake Bell. The “Sooner Magic” would be on display with a huge fake field goal pass to Michael Hunnicutt who would tie the game at 17. Holding a 20-17 lead with a minute and a half remaining, OSU runningback Desmond Roland would score his second touchdown to take the lead 24-20. With all thought of it being over, Bell leads a spectacular one minute drive that would be capped off with an unbelievable pass to the corner of the end zone where he connected with Jalen Saunders with 19 seconds left to take the lead. The last Cowboys drive would be a lateral fumble that saw Erik Striker run into the end zone to take all the air out of the stadium and would give the Sooners another 10 win regular season and an upcoming Sugar Bowl appearance.

9. “Farewell Nebraska” 2010 Big 12 Championship

Arguably one of the greatest rivalries in college football, OU and Nebraska would meet for the final time to this date in the 2010 Big 12 Championship game. The Cornhuskers were moving to the Big 10 and were running straight out the gates as they opened up the game with a 17-0 lead. Landry Jones would finally get it going for the Sooners with a 49 yard touchdown pass to Kenny Stills, and would also get a rushing touchdown that would eventually tie the game up at 17. Three important field goals by Jimmy Stevens and a bunch of defensive stops including Travis Lewis with an interception in the end zone and two fumble recoveries, as well as a fumble recovery by Austin Box. The Sooners would get the comeback win in Arlington and a trip to the Fiesta Bowl where they would defeat Uconn.

8. “Double OT in Knoxville” vs Tennessee 2015

Tennessee Football was finally back after many years and head coach Butch Jones was ready to prove that to his 100,000+ home atmosphere with star players like Jalen Hurd and Josh Dobbs, while the next man up for the quarterback spot at Oklahoma was a walk-on named Baker Mayfield. Once again like the last game on this list the Sooners started off slow with another 17-0 deficit and would only get 3 points at half. Their first touchdown would finally happen with 8:20 left in the 4th as Mayfield connected with Semaje Perine. The defense would continue to get stops all 2nd half and with 40 seconds left in regulation Mayfield fades a beautiful pass to Sterling Shepard to tie the game and eventually bring the game to overtime. Both teams quarterbacks would run it in for touchdowns to send the game to double OT, but it would be the huge night of Shepard that solidified the comeback as Mayfield connected with him one more time in the 2nd OT and he hurdled his way into the end zone to give OU its first lead of the night and defeat the Volunteers in stunning fashion.

7. “Bedlam goes Hollywood” 2017

Another Bedlam that lived up to its name, as well as it being on the road in Stillwater. Mayfield vs Rudolph in a game I called “The first team to reach 60 points will win”. The game would go into halftime 38-38. So many dynamic plays from Baker Mayfield who threw for 598 yards with 5 touchdown passes and also ran for 1. It was Marquis “Hollywood” Brown who had the biggest impact of the night receiving with 9 receptions for 265 yards and 2 touchdowns including an 84 yard touchdown and a 77 yard touchdown! With a 55-52 lead with less than a minute left, Trey Sermon iced the game with a 53 yard touchdown run to keep the 2017 playoff run alive.

6. “Heisman Shootout” vs West Virginia 2018

The game we chose from this last unforgettable season was the last regular season battle with West Virginia with the winner going to take on Texas in the Big 12 Championship game as well as a last chance to attract Heisman votes for Kyler Murray and Will Grier. They would each have huge nights in Morgantown. OU had been criticized all season for having a weak defense and they would get nailed from the start of this game. Will Grier finished with 539 yards and 4 touchdown passes including 2 huge touchdown passes to Gary Jennings, one for 75 yards and the other for 57 yards. Murray finished with 364 yards, 3 touchdown passes, and a crazy 55 yard touchdown run. It was the defense however they came up clutch with 2 huge fumble recoveries for touchdowns, the first by Caleb Kelly for 10 yards and the second by Curtis Bolton for 48 yards that knocked the life out of Mountaineer fans as the Sooners would win a slugfest.

5. “Tech Gets Wrecked” 2008

Finally, the first home game on this list, and it was an important one. The 2008 season saw a three team race for first place in the Big 12 as Texas defeated OU, Texas Tech defeated Texas, and now the Red Raiders were the #2 team in the country traveling to Norman to take on Sam Bradford and the pumped up #5 Sooners. This was the craziest, lobsided first half for a top 5 match-up in history as the Sooners led 42-7 in the second quarter! Some say it was the loudest crowd they ever heard at Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Running backs Demarco Murray and Chris Brown would combine for 5 touchdowns and Bradford would throw for 4 more touchdowns and give Texas Tech it’s first loss of the season

4. “Mayfield vs Mahomes” 2016

Another Texas Tech match-up this time 8 years later in Lubbock where former Tech quarterback Baker Mayfield would make his return wearing Crimson and Creme against Patrick Mahomes another quarterback that knows how to put up points in a hurry. Both offenses would combine to break the NCAA record for most offensive yards in game with 1,708 yards (854 yards for both teams)! Baker would throw for 545 yards and 7 touchdowns. Mahomes threw for 734 yards, 8 touchdowns and threw a total of 88 passes in the game. OU had the running balance unlike Tech with Joe Mixon rushing for 263 of the Sooners 306 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns as the Sooners would defeat Tech in an offensive takeover.

#3. OU 2015 Season Comeback (Baylor,TCU, OSU)

The 2015 season was magical in its own way. After suffering a big upset to Texas earlier in the season, OU was off everybody’s radar of going to the College Football Playoff. Mayfield was in his first season with the Sooners and everybody was expecting Baylor to win the Big 12. Then the Sooners would travel to Waco and shut everybody up as they upsetted undefeated #6 Baylor. Now they jumped from #12 to #9 and had #18 TCU next in Norman. A hard fought win and a missed 2 point conversion by the Horned Frogs gave OU back to back ranked wins and had another one coming in Stillwater the next week. Now they were #3 taking on #11 Oklahoma State with a playoff berth at stake with a win. This time they thrashed the Cowboys 58-23 and completed the best 3 games to end a regular season I have ever witnessed.

2. “We Want Bama” 2014 Sugar Bowl

After getting crushed in Norman 41-12 against Baylor to receive their 2nd loss of the season, and somehow defeating Oklahoma State in Stillwater with three different quarterbacks, the Sooners were lucky to end the season with 10 wins and would be playing in a BCS bowl. However this was a game that nobody would of predicted the Sooners winning. They would be competing against the Alabama Crimson Tide who was arguably the best team in college football, and the only reason they weren’t competing for a National Championship was thanks to their rival Auburn who miraculously pulled off the craziest play of this century, the “Kick Six”. No one was giving OU a chance and some will try to make the argument that Alabama wasn’t excited to play in the Sugat Bowl but OU came out and gave one of the best, if not the best performances in their bowl history. Trevor Knight would have the best game of his career going 32-44 passing for 348 yards and 4 touchdowns.

OU 45 – Alabama 31

1. “Plant the Flag” vs Ohio State 2017

The biggest OU game in the last decade, and the sweetest revenge took place one year after Ohio State came into Norman and dictated every second of the game in 2016. Baker Mayfield said it was embarrassing having them sing their fight song on Owen Field and that nobody had picked the Sooners to win the rematch on College Gameday. These comments would be the reason Mayfield would plant the OU flag in the middle of the “O” on the Ohio State field after stunning the world in an unbelievable performance. Mayfield threw 27-35, 386 yards, and 3 touchdowns over shadowing OSU quarterback JT Barrett. Not only was the game exciting but it also would put OU over the Buckeyes in the playoff committees selcetion later in the season, and it would be the first big win in the Lincoln Riley head coaching era.
