Wow! What an event. UFC 226 delivered on almost all cylinders and produced the best pay per view to date in 2018. Daniel Cormier defeated Stipe Miocic by first round knockout and then called out Brock Lesnar, who stormed the cage and shoved Cormier. DC was too happy to even be slightly bothered, and the biggest heavyweight title fight in recent years is now in the making with Lesnar vs Cormier. The champ-champ vs the needle-needle in a David vs Goliath type fight.
Also on the card, Mike Perry got back in the win column vs ranked lightweight Paul Felder. Derrick Lewis outlasted Francis Ngannou in the worlds most boring heavyweight fight. Anthony Pettis show he still has stuff left in the tank as he beat Michael Chiesa on his way to welterweight. Paulo Costa is a bad man and I’m not sure what he’s taking but it’s so advanced USADA hasn’t banned it yet. Also Gokhan Saki got knocked out minutes into the fight by Khalil Rountree. Raphael Assuncao also threw his name to the top of the bantamweight rankings as well.
It was all in all a great night for the UFC considering they lost their co-main event and featherweight title days before the fight.
Stipe needs to take some time off, especially with Lesnar-DC probably not happening for another 6 months. If Jon Jones is suspended for 2 more years and Daniel Cormier retires post Lesnar, then it makes sense for Stipe to wait for his title shot that he has easily earned. Curtis Blaydes, Alexander Volkov, and Derrick Lewis are waiting for him to return but there’s no clear top contender aside from Stipe right now. But with the heavyweight lacking a top contender and therefore giving DC a shot, the heavyweight division shot themselves in the foot.
Speaking of rankings, who on earth is the GOAT now? Is it possible Jon Jones cemented himself as the greatest of all time without even fighting, if DC beats Lesnar and retires as an undefeated heavyweight how can you argue against him? Is Stipe still the greatest heavyweight of all time? Is DC the second best LHW ever and the best Heavyweight champion ever? Is Jon Jones coming back to heavyweight to one up him? So many questions.
Anyway, here’s my updated top P4P list for ACTIVE UFC fighters and guys named Conor McGregor and GSP.
- Daniel Cormier
- Conor McGregor
- Tyron Woodley
- Max Holloway
- Robert Whittaker
- TJ Dillashaw
- Stipe Miocic
Add Jon Jones to the mix and that list gets really crowded really quickly. He’s clearly first or second at this point, you have to give DC the nod on the pound for pound list since he’s the two division weight champion.
Here’s a list of people DC and Stipe have beaten by the way:
Dan Henderson, Roy Nelson, Frank Mir, Patrick Cummins, Josh Barnett, Antonio Silva, Anthony Johnson, Alexander Gustafson, Anderson Silva, Volkan Oezdimer, Jeff Monson, Mark Hunt, Andrei Arlovski, Francis Ngannou, Alistair Overeem, Fabricio Werdum, Junior Dos Santos, Gabriel Gonzaga, Roy Nelson. And Brock Lesnar. Whoops.
By the way, Brock Lesnar calling Miocic a piece of s*** when Miocic would literally murder him in an octagon isn’t cool. Hopefully he gets a stab at him as well.
UFC 235 in March! Let’s go!
